Immune System Disorders
HYPERSENSITIVITY
In hypersensitivity, the immune response is inappropriate or excessive. This is characteristic of the rejection of a transplant, autoimmune reactions to one’s own body, or in allergies, where the body reacts to nonpathologic environmental antigens or haptens.
AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS
In autoimmune diseases, the immune system fails to recognize certain cells within the body as belonging to the host, so attacks and destroys them inappropriately. This may be because antibodies initially generated against some foreign antigen also react to a host cell that is physically similar.
IMMUNODEFICIENCY DISEASES
In severe combined immunodeficiency disease condition, there is an absence of T and B lymphocytes, due to a recessive genetic trait.
