Briefly explain insulin resistance, giving examples of how this ‘resistance’ occurs. (4 points)
Cite an (Australian) example of a biguanide and a sulphonylurea and compare the two with respect to their mechanism of action and the important adverse effects and contraindications. (6 points)
Include information on why you would choose one of these over the other. (2 points)
Clarification:
In “giving examples of how this resistance occurs” make sure that you explain each example. So, if you cite central obesity, you will give at least a sentence explaining that. These were described in the tutorial.
The term ‘Australian’ example means that it is available in Australia. One example was given in the tutorial but there are others. If you choose one of the others, you will need to research the adverse effects because they are different between sulphonylureas.
The comparison of the two drugs does not need to be a direct comparison except for the final sentence. (include information on why you would choose one of these over the other; see the final point below).
Finally, the discussion on ‘include information on why you would choose one of these over the other’ is not simply that you choose Drug X because it is the first line therapy for diabetes. These medications are for different stages of diabetes, and sometimes they are used together. Discuss the types of clients who are going to benefit most from each, or who would be likely to be adversely affected by one of the medications.
