SPEECH and POWER:
In this week’s assigned reading about COMEDY, and in EARLIER READINGS about the AMERICAN MIND and AMERICAN HABITS of thinking (or resisting thought), various AUTHORS have pointed out the REASONS WHY various groups of people have RESISTED certain thoughts or certain lines of QUESTIONING or TALKING. Indeed, even SOCRATES was PUT ON TRIAL for HIS LIFE because of the WAY he talked in PUBLIC. He says in his FIRST PARAGRAPH in “THE APOLOGY” (defense) that he will SPEAK the WAY HE ALWAYS DID , and many scholars note that he may have been killed for TONE ALONE.

Anyone who watched the recent Vice President Debates might have concluded  that “tone” is sometimes perceived even in a person’s facial features, smiles, pacing, and more. Indeed, assumptions or power, gender, and more, as well as a host of other historical circumstances may circumscribe what an audience takes as “sincere” and what seems to be posturing or dismissiveness or condescension, etc. Like him or not, President Donald Trump is also one whose voice, intonation, facial and hand gestures have been read and interpreted a great deal. UC Berkeley super-linguist George Lakoff has spent some time analyzing President Trump’s language

Understanding Trump’s Use of Language

and though you don’t need to read this linked article, it behooves us to recognize that the WAY people SPEAK can have GREAT SWAY in the PUBLIC SPHERE. It’s not just WHAT people say, but HOW they say it, that matters in ISSUES of POLITICS, COMEDY, and street-based justice movements, and MORE.

For this DISCUSSION, MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN the READINGS and ANY CURRENT or HISTORICAL ASPECT of OUR WORLD, whether it’s COMEDY, POLITICS, SOCIAL CHANGE, or something else. Use ONE or MORE READINGS to ELUCIDATE ONE or MORE of the FOLLOWING CONCERNS.. using any ONE OF THESE FOUR approaches:

1. Is it possible to make a Change without offending someone? When in history has this ever happened, and if the answer is “never,” then why do so many find offense now so intolerable when changes are being made?

2. Please describe (in Words) an instance in HISTORY,  FILM, SONGS, or the READINGS where the  MESSAGE or  POINT seemed to depend upon the  WORDS and the STYLE in DELIVERING the words (as Socrates sincere and down-to-earth style of speaking and questioning underscored his message that he was not wise, though ironically wiser than others who thought they were wise , when they were not.) Do you think that changes in technology will make STYLE more or less important to message-making? Do you think it’s possible to be more or less offensive/ more or less inclusive when STYLE becomes part of message-making?

3. Pick one or more of the GROUPS of people FIGURED in ONE or MORE of our assigned readings where we see people RESISTING information, learning or change, on the one hand, and those who are RACING to assumptions and a fixed belief system, on the other hand, without much REFLECTION. In your own drawing or paragraph, show how a particular group of people have POLICED LANGUAGE and STYLE of COMMUNICATION to SERVE their OWN INTERESTS or to HELP the INTERESTS of OTHERS.

You can choose freely from the range of people depicted by  our assigned authors. Here is a short list of the GROUPS that are considered as RESISTANT to LEARNING or RACING to ASSUMPTIONS or using LANGUAGE and STYLE in SERVICE to OTHERS, etc. : young people;  Americans; white people; under-educated people,; under-educated whites; whites who came to “conquer and convert” (Baldwin); elites who fear the voters (Chomsky)
