Love and romance might be the one topic that’s been most written about in human history. I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but it seems like a good bet. Songs, poems, plays, short stories, novels, TV shows, and movies have all centered on the topic, ranging from idyllic interludes of mutually interested parties, to depictions of rape, abuse, assaults, and betrayal. There’s a lot to say about love, and writers of various genres seem all too happy to lend their opinion.
And people love to consume literature based on the subject. Romance novels (of varying quality) are the best-selling genre of novels. Every genre of music has some love songs in it, again, ranging from sweet and tender declarations of love to titles like “Song for the Dumped” and “Cold As Ice.” We have a multitude of works to choose from, but for now, here are the readings we’ll be using.
“Good Country People” by Flannery O’Connor (Short Story)
“Sure Thing” by David Ives (Play)
“Sonnet 130” by William Shakespeare (Poem)
“Sonnet from the Portuguese #43” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (Poem)
“To the Virgins Make Much of Time” by Robert Herrick (Poem)
“The Passionate Shepherd to his Love” by Christopher Marlowe (Poem)
“The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd” by Walter Raleigh (Poem)
Thesis Question: Based on what we’ve read, seen, and listened to, what is your advice for dating?
-The question is rather broad. Narrow it down. You can give advice about finding love, about being in a relationship, ending a relationship, or dealing with the end of a relationship. You can narrow your advice to men, women, the transgendered, straight people, LGBTQ people, young people, old people, people new to relationships, people who have been in relationships for years, rich people, poor people, attractive people, unattractive people… You get the idea. The more specific you can be with your advice/thesis, the stronger the paper will be.
-You MUST use “Good Country People” and at least two of the poems in your response. Use them as evidence and examples of your claim. You MUST make reference to a reading in every body paragraph. Try to use two, maybe three readings in every body paragraph.
