America consists of a blend of various ethnicities, religions, languages, and cultures, all of which have contributed to the diversification and shaping of the country to what it is today. These factors make immigrants move to the United States with the notion that America is the most appropriate country to have their lives, and those of their families improved. Immigration is as prevalent as ever in the U.S. right now, with “1.6 millions” (Benuto, Casas, Cummings, & Newlands, 2018) of people entering the country each year in search of hope for the future. This inquiry is designed to showcase all the struggles immigrants go through to obtain happiness in the United States and how we all have a common goal that unites us. With this in mind, has the meaning of the American Dream changed throughout the last decades? Why do immigrants give up so much in order to come to America in search of happiness? Is their journey worth it?From as early as the 1400s men have been trying to come to what is now known as the United States of America in pursuit of a better life, riches, and ultimately happiness. Even then, people believed that “regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, anyone can attain their own version of success in a society where upward mobility is possible for everyone” (Benuto, Casas, Cummings, & Newlands, 2018). This idea of attaining success in the United States is known as the American Dream. Unfortunately, because America’s image is so loaded with idealism, it rarely lives up to said standards. Thus, hope often gives way to disillusionment. For many the “American Dream is driven by the desire of providing for their families and achieving their own economic security in a new homeland. The hope of opportunity and economic gain is met with the reality of perilous journeys, grueling work, long hours, overwhelming isolation, and long separations from loved ones. Still, they come” (“The Dream of America,” 2016). There are many difficulties immigrants face once they arrive to America. Although many might believe the contrary, immigrating to the U.S. comes with a high list of uncertainties. A key concern for families is “access to health care due to lack of medical insurance” (“The Dream of America,” 2016). It is near impossible for immigrants to possess healthcare since they are not documented and do not have a social security number. Even when they are able to access healthcare other obstacles step in the way such as language proficiency and cultural differences. Finding jobs can also be an issue because most jobs require the person to be fluent in English, which many immigrants are not. ..
